Biography on Jeff Howell

Jeff Howell is surely best known as a writer for some of the broadsheet newspapers, firstly writing the Doctor on the House column for The Independent on Sunday and then, for the past decade or so the On the Level column in The Sunday Telegraph. But to us Jeff Howell is probably best known for writing The Rising Damp Myth, The Builders' White Boots and the gem that we have discovered recently called The Sunday Telegraph Guide to Looking After Your Property. “The Rising Damp Myth” has been a major influence in helping to change how the surveying profession deals with dampness and therefore making house buying an easier, less painful and less expensive process.

Where do you start with Jeff Howell?

Where do you start with Jeff Howell other than in a good pub drinking a reasonably good beer somewhere in London, talking about his possible next book The Sustainable House Myth? We will declare our interests first, that we are Building Surveyors and we know Jeff Howell's work from his guest lecturing at the Anglia Ruskin University where we have also lectured.

Busman's Holiday

What we really like about Jeff Howell is that he has a genuine interest in both people and property, particularly people's homes. It became apparent whilst discussing various property problems that we have come across during our work as building surveyors that he is very concerned and questioning about the building and housing industries. We brought along three examples to chat to Jeff Howell about, to see what his opinions would be. The examples, which we can only describe as horrendous work being carried out by house builders, he advised very matter-of-factly are very common, and typical of many of the letters he receives from his Sunday Telegraph readers.
